The Books - ‘A Cold Freezin’ Night’
This video has already been doing the rounds the last week or so, but I had to post it.
‘A Cold Freezin’ Night’ is taken from The Books’ upcoming album ‘The Way Out’. When I saw the band live a few weeks ago in Berlin, they showcased quite a few new songs from the album, including this one.
The beat heavy nature of the track feels like quite a departure from their previous work, but it still contains the sample-fuelled collages, and intricate guitar playing, that makes The Books so appealing to me, and when you throw in the crazy chopped up video, it really adds to the songs’s childlike charm.
The band explain on their blog, that the track was build around samples of kids recording themselves onto tapes (which the band found on their many charity shop hunts). The result is a bizzare slap-bass dance jam, but with the addition of the children’s (sometimes disturbing, but mostly sweet) musings, ’A Cold Freezin’ Night’ totally warms the heart.
‘The Way Out’ is released July 20th. If you get a chance to see The Books on tour, they put on a fantastic show, and are super funny too :)
